HIL 2014 – Hockey India League Season 2

The season for hockey is back on. The Hockey India League is back this year after all the success and glory from last year. It is ready to kick start from January 25, 2014 at Mohali. The spectators and organizers are hoping that this year the tournament will reach new heights. Unlike last year when there were 5 teams battling to win the tournament, this year there will be 1 team more to give them tough competition. Here are the teams that will be playing this year:

  • Delhi Wave Riders
  • Punjab Warriors
  • Mumbai Magicians
  • Uttar Pradesh Wizards
  • Ranchi Rhinos
  • Kalinga Lancers (newly added this year)

This year too the tournament will be played in the home soil with each team having a home ground for their own and they will play two games each with their opponents, one in their home ground and one in the opponents home ground. Following are the home grounds of the respective teams:

  • Delhi Wave Riders- Dhyan Chand National Stadium
  • Punjab Warriors- Surjeet Hockey Stadium
  • Mumbai Magicians- Mahindra Hockey Stadium
  • Uttar Pradesh Wizards- Dhyan Chand Astroturf Stadium
  • Ranchi Rhinos- Astroturf Hockey Stadium
  • Kalinga Lancers- Kalinga Stadium

Like last year this year too the International Hockey Federation will provide 30 days of transfer window where the team owners can buy players from the auction that will be held. This is one of the most exciting part of the whole tournament because the supporters eagerly wait for the best players to come to their team and it is also an important part for the teams because with each player they own they can build the play accordingly. Last year the Ranchi Rhinos were crowned champions after they defeated the Delhi Wave Riders in the final by 2 goals to 1. For the Rhinos it would be an added pressure because they would be the defending champions while the other teams would also try their best to get a hand to that great trophy. This year the tournament director Mr. Bjorn Isberg and the competition director Mr. Todd Faulds says that the stakes would be higher and each player and each team will put their efforts to win that trophy and also the prize money. Hero MotoCorp will once again be the title sponsor for this tournament. The multiyear deal will stay for the first five years of the tournament and it might change or remain the same after that depending on the response of the people and also the profitability gained from the tournament. For all the spectators who will be watching this tournament over the television there is good news. This year also Star Sports will broadcast the Hockey India League. Last year it was both ESPN and Star Sports but this year with the name ESPN being changed to Star Sports 4 people should be more comfortable with it. On top of that if they have the sports package in their television then they would be able to enjoy this tournament in HD as well.
